VOLLINTINE STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
As part of the broader Klondike Small Area Plan developed by Opticos, the Vollintine Avenue Street Improvement Project responds directly to the community’s call for cleaner, safer and more connected neighborhoods. Malasri Engineering was engaged to translate this vision into practical, lasting improvements along a critical corridor in Memphis.
The project focused on reducing vehicle speeds, increasing pedestrian safety and elevating public spaces. To this end, we designed and implemented a series of traffic-calming and safety-enhancing features – including raised crosswalks equipped with solar-powered rectangular rapid flashing beacons, a raised intersection at Vollintine Avenue and Alma Street, and landscaped bump-outs to reduce crossing distances. These elements not only slow traffic, they also make pedestrian movement more visible and intuitive.
Transit users now benefit from the addition of new bus shelters, while vehicular traffic is better managed thanks to a modern mast-arm traffic signal at the intersection of Vollintine and Watkins. A resurfaced corridor and speed humps also create a safer and more consistent driving experience.
The completed project represents a measurable improvement in the day-to-day experience for residents and visitors to Klondike.
