HIGHLAND HEIGHTS STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Located within the Jackson Planning District, the Highland Heights neighborhood is home to a culturally rich community with a strong vision for safer, more connected streets and accessible public spaces. The Heights Line emerged from that vision—a community-driven initiative led by Heights CDC and realized through thoughtful engineering and design.
The project reimagines National Street, transforming it from a fast-moving four-lane corridor into a safer, more walkable two-lane street with added parking and a wide, landscaped median. The reclaimed space in the center of the roadway now hosts a shared-use trail, native plantings, and public seating – creating a linear park that supports both movement and gathering.
The project includes a modernized mast-arm traffic signal at Macon Road to improve safety and flow. To the south, it connects seamlessly into the Highland Heights project and ultimately links with the broader Hampline bikeway on Broad Avenue – establishing a continuous route for cyclists and pedestrians.
The Heights Line supports multiple community priorities: calming traffic, improving connectivity, and enhancing public spaces. It’s a clear example of how infrastructure can be retooled to reflect local values and serve the people who live there.
